Groups and Special Events- We have a modern fleet of vehicles that can handle large numbers of people. We can work with you for special departure dates and times and can also provide picnic lunches and other meals through our sister restaurants the True Grit Cafe and Galloping Goose Bakery and Cafe. Our vehicles have radio public address systems on board so the driver can narrate as you travel along as well as answer questions from the passengers. Each vehicle is equipped with blankets, ponchos and first aid kits. Each driver holds a Red Cross First Aid certificate and is skilled in public relations. Treasure Mountain This favorite historic tour takes us up through the historic Red Mountain Town district and over the beautiful "skyline drive" or Brooklyn Mine Trail. We descend down into Silverton for lunch and then on up and over the Treasure Mountain area where we take a look at the famous Animas Forks ghost town. From there we travel up California Gulch to the pass at 12,930 feet and then to Hurricane Pass overlooking the beautiful and deep Lake Como, headwaters of the Uncompahgre River. Then over Corkscrew Pass between Red Mountains 1 & 2 and back to Ouray via U.S. 550. Lots of ruins and remnants of the 'old days'. This interesting and exciting all day tour begins at 8:00 A.M. and returns at 5:00 P.M.
Yankee Boy Basin This is the photographers paradise when the flowers are in full bloom! We drive along Canyon Creek, past the famous Camp Bird Mine, thru the ghost town of Sneffels, past the Revenue, Atlas and Ruby Trust Mines, past Potosi Peak to the famous Twin Falls and into the basin surrounded by rugged and unusual mountain terrain. Spectacular wild flowers in season. Wonderful views of the valley as we return to Ouray. Allow up to 4 hours for this tour.
Black Bear Pass/ Imogene Pass What a spectacular trip this is! Begin on the Million Dollar Highway passing through the ghost town of Ironton and Red Mountain to the top of Red Mountain Pass, then to the top of Black Bear Pass at 12,810 feet where we can look down on the town sites of Summit, Congress, and the Telluride Ski area. We wind our way down past the Black Bear Mine, down the face of Ingram Peak across the infamous "steps" past Ingram Falls and Bridal Veil Falls into Telluride. In the afternoon we move up Savage Basin to Imogene Pass through the amazing ruins of the ghost town of Tomboy. From there we climb to 13,114' at Imogene Pass with incredible vistas of mountain peaks and alpine lakes. We descend through the famous Camp Bird gold mining district past the Yellow Rose Mine, beautiful waterfalls and wonderful flowers in season. This is an all day tour from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. rich in history and old mining sites dating back to the 1800s. Corkscrew Pass/ Red Mountains This is a spectacular trip which cuts off in Ironton Park then up past the old Corkscrew turntable over the sulfur run-outs, past the remains of the Midnight, Earl and Caronate King mines to the top of Corkscrew Pass between Red Mountain 1 and 2 at an elevation of 12,220 feet. The color of the red mountains is astonishing and if time permits we will make the famous Hurricane Pass overlooking the headwaters of the Uncompahgre River. Allow up to 4 hours for this tour.
Engineer Pass This is a marvelous trip for the adventurous as we turn off of the famous Million Dollar Highway and immediately experience the ruggedness of the trail to Engineer Pass. We pull past the remains of the Mickey Breene and Des Ouray Mines deep in the canyon of the headwaters of the Uncompahgre River. At the San Juan Chief Mines we get our first view of the incredibly steep switchbacks to the pass at 12,980 feet. At Oh Point! near the pass we get an incredible panoramic view of the San Juans and many of her fourteener peaks. Allow up to 4.5 hours for this tour.
Governor's Basin This tour provides wonderful vistas above tree line. Traveling up Canyon Creek we pass by the famous Camp Bird Mine and then under the "overhang" and through the ghost town of Sneffels. Here we fork left and proceed upwards toward the old mining ruins of the Virginius, Mountain Top and Humbolt mines which lie at the base of the jagged St. Sophie's Ridge. Great views of the rugged peaks and overlook of Yankee Boy Basin down below. Total elevation 12,000 plus feet. Allow up to 4 hours for this tour.
Imogene Pass This is the highest drivable pass in the San Juan Mountains. Crossing Canyon Creek, we begin our trek up Imogene Basin past the sight of the Yellow Rose Mine and water falls. As we near tree line we pass level 2 of the incredible Camp Bird Gold Mine. Pushing upwards into steeper terrain we come to Imogene Pass at 13,114' with incredible vistas all the way into Utah. On return we will overlook the beautiful Lake Tarmigan and see the site of Ft. Peabody, once the highest military fortress in the U.S.
Ophir Pass One of the most popular tours over the old wagon toll road (Ophir Pass)at 11,789 feet providing a beautiful view of the Mount Wilson massif to the West. We will slowly descend down into old Ophir which was once a ghost town but now somewhat rejuvenated. From there we will proceed to the ghost town of Alta and then on into Telluride for lunch. After lunch we will drive up through the great Tomboy mining district and on to Imogene Pass at 13,114 feet. From here you will enjoy a wonderful view of the Red Mountains, Lake Tarmigan and Ft. Peabody, once the highest military fortress in the U.S. From here we will wind our way down past the site of the fabulous Camp Bird Gold Mine and then on into Ouray.
Alpine Loop This all day tour takes you over the famous Alpine Loop through historic districts and wonderful mountain scenery. Elevations as high as 12,980 feet will be obtained. Prices: $120.00 per adult & $60.00 per child 4-12. This tour is best enjoyed in the spring or fall. This tour takes us past some of the more notable mines such as the San Juan Chief and the Mickey Breene. As we ascend the rugged Engineer trail we will pass up through the alpine tundra to Oh Point! which provides an incredible 360 degree panorama of the San Juan Mountains. Once over the top we will proceed down the old stage coach route along Henson Creek and the old site of Capitol City and into Lake City where we will do lunch. Then in the afternoon we will wind our way up over Cinnamon Pass and down to Animas Forks, one of the best preserved ghost towns in the area. Time permitting, we will proceed over California, Hurricane and Corkscrew passes on our way back to Ouray. This is a long tour and will cover over 110 miles of trails so be prepared
